A NJ Transit train crashed as it came into the Hoboken, New Jersey terminal Thursday morning at around 8:30 a.m. New Jersey state EMS reports that there are 114 injuries and one woman who was standing on the platform died. The crash also caused serious damage to the terminal itself, with parts of the roof collapsing.

This is a breaking story and will continue to be updated. Moments after the crash, social media users posted photos of the scene and videos of the aftermath.

1 Person Confirmed Dead & 100 People Injured

The Hoboken police chief told NBC New York that there is a possibility of “mass causalities,” as the train might have derailed.

The Top Theory at This Time Is That the Crash Was Caused by an Accident

NBC New York is also reporting that law enforcement believe that this was an accident or an error by the conductor, citing four law enforcement officials. The station was reporting that three people were dead, but the number has been lowered back to one. That person was described as a woman in her 30s who was on the platform, sources told NBC New York. The woman was later identified as Fabiola Bittar de Kroon, 34.

The high number of injuries might partly be due to the fact that this was a shorter train, meaning that the first two cars were more packed, as one passenger described to NBC New York.

Officials told ABC7 that many of those injured suffered “critical injuries.” Many of the injuries were suffered by people in the first car. Those in the second car could leave the train easily, but there are reports that some had to break windows to get out.

The New York Fire Department tweeted that they are sending a Medical Evacuation Transport Unit, which can carry at least 30 people to a hospital, to Hoboken.

The NTSB arrived on the scene to investigate.

Passengers told ABC7 New York that the train was 1614 on the Pascack Valley Line and left Spring Valley at 7:23 a.m.

Another passenger told NBC News that the train did not slow down as it entered the terminal. The passengers knew it was coming in, but they wondered why it wasn’t slowing down.

The engineer survived and is being treated at a nearby hospital, a law enforcement official told NBC New York. A witness told the media that he saw the engineer slouched over in the engine cab. The engineer was later identified as Thomas Gallagher, 48.

PATH Train suspended service into and out of PATH’s Hobeken Station. Passengers have been advised to use NJ Transit Light Rail. According to a PATH ridership report published in January, an average of over 28,000 people use the Hoboken station on the weekdays. The terminal is the end of the line and commuters use the stop on their way to New York City. Over 100,000 people use NJ Transit trains to commute to New York City every day.

NJ Transit service is being diverted to Secaucus Junction.

If you need to check on a relative, the Jersey City Medical Center has set up a hotline, which can be reached at 201-915-2691.
