A new video purportedly released by the Islamic State titled “And the Disbelievers Planned, but Allah Planned, and Allah is the Best of Planners” focuses on the five jihadists behind the July 1 terrorist attack at the Holey Artisan Bakery cafe in Dhaka. The attack left 29 dead.
The title comes from Quranic verse 8:30, which reads:
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
The New York Times reports that, “Most of the victims were ‘ferociously’ attacked with sharp weapons, a military spokesman said. A kitchen worker who had escaped said the attackers were armed with pistols, swords and bombs.”
On July 2, ISIS officially claimed the attack.
On July 6, ISIS released a video celebrating the attacks. The video also threatened more attacks in Bangladesh. However, the video was made in and released from Syria, not Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s 160 million people are almost all Sunni Muslims, including a demographic bulge under the age of 25. This makes it valuable as a recruiting ground for the Islamic State, now under pressure in its core territory of Iraq and Syria.
Over the past few months, ISIS has increasingly been losing ground in Iraq and Syria.
According to terrorism analyst Michael S. Smith II, the video features brief testimonials by the five Dhaka attackers.
