WATCH: Trump Demands Clinton Apologize for ‘Basket of Deplorables’ Remark

During a speech on Monday afternoon, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump demanded his opponent, Hillary Clinton, apologize for saying that about half of Trump’s supporters are deplorable.

Trump said that Clinton’s comments were the most explicit attack on the American voter ever uttered by a party’s nominee and that Clinton has contempt in her heart for the average citizen. He concluded that Clinton should be disqualified from the presidency, especially if she does not apologize for her statement.

“If she wont retract her comments in full, I don’t see how she can credibly campaign any further,” Trump said.

This stands in contrast to Trump, who has refused to ever apologize for anything he has said throughout the 2016 election, including saying that John McCain is not a war hero because he was captured. However, he did once express a vague sense of regret for unspecified remarks he has made in the past.

In Monday’s speech, Trump went on to list off his campaign’s talking points, such as wanting to secure the border, and argued that people who believe these things are not racists.

On Friday, Hillary Clinton said that about half of Trump’s supporters fit into what she calls the “basket of deplorables,” i.e. those who are racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc. She later expressed regret for describing this group as making up as much as half of Trump’s base but did not fully retract the idea behind the statement.
