After taking a tongue-lashing from First Lady Michelle Obama in a speech she delivered in Phoenix, Arizona, Thursday, Donald Trump lashed back at FLOTUS during a rally at Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher, North Carolina, the following day.

In other remarks at the rally, Trump referred to President Barack Obama as a “baby,” a putdown which may have been provoked by the president’s command to Trump earlier in the week to “stop whining,” in reference to Trump’s claims that the 2016 Presidential election will be “rigged” against him.

Read the president’s remarks — which he has since reiterated in a campaign speech for Clinton, in the article linked below.

“We have a bunch of babies running our country, a bunch of losers. They are babies,” Trump said at the North Carolina rally. “We have a president, all he wants to do is campaign. His wife, all she wants to do is campaign.”

He went on to invoke a quote from Michelle Obama, which she spoke in 2007 when her husband was still a United States Senator staging what appeared to be a longshot campaign against Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“I see how much his wife likes Hillary, but wasn’t she the one that started the statement: ‘If you can’t take care of your home, you can’t take care of the White House or the country.'”

But while Trump is correct that Michelle Obama did state that quote, Trump omitted the full context of Obama’s remarks — which were not an attack on Clinton, but a reference to how she sought to balance her family life with the rigors of a campaign for president.

“Our view was that, if you can’t run your own house, you certainly can’t run the White House. So, so we’ve adjusted our schedules to make sure that our girls are first, so while he’s traveling around, I do day trips,” Obama said during the campaign that resulted in Barack Obama winning the Democratic nomination over Clinton and subsequently defeating Republican John McCain in the presidential election.

“They just know that I was at home to tuck them in at night, and it keeps them grounded, and, and children, the children in our country have to know that they come first. And our girls do and that’s why we’re doing this. We’re in this race for not just our children, but all of our children.”

Michelle Obama’s remarks that apparently set off Trump came during a campaign appearance in support of Clinton in Phoenix, Arizona, Thursday. While the state of Arizona has voted for a Democrat every presidential election but one since 1952, polling shows Clinton with a lead — albeit an extremely narrow one — in the state with 18 days left before the November 8 voting.

In the speech, Obama said that Trump, by refusing to say whether he will accept the results of the 2016 election, is “threatening the very idea of America itself.” She also blasted Trump for making “this election so dirty and so ugly that we just turn off the TV and say, ‘We just don’t want any part of it.'”
