On Friday, the FBI announced that new emails relevant to Hillary Clinton’s server investigation had been discovered during a separate investigation into Anthony Weiner’s sexting scandal. Exactly how many emails were found? Rumors range from three to thousands.

Here’s what we know so far.

According to The New York Times, one federal official said that “thousands” of new emails were uncovered related to the Clinton server case. A New York Times reporter later verified this on Twitter, sharing that there were “tens of thousands” of emails to go through:

The emails were found on electronic devices that Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin shared.  (The Washington Post reported that the emails were found on a computer seized from Weiner.) James Comey, FBI Director, announced the finding in a letter to Congress, saying they appeared “pertinent to the investigation.” The FBI is taking steps to determine if these emails contain classified information and how relevant they are to the investigation.

Incorrect rumors had been circulating earlier in the day that there were only three emails found. Kurt Eichenwald of Vanity Fair shared several tweets about the rumor, including this one:

This was completely different from The New York Times’ source, who said there were potentially thousands of new emails. Eichenwald later corrected his tweet to say the number ‘three” was wrong:

Interestingly, in the original investigation into Clinton’s email server, there were three emails marked “c” that did not have a header, which Comey talked about on July 7 to the House Oversight Committee. It’s possible that “three email” rumor originated from this story and was getting mixed up with today’s information. At this point, the exact number of new emails found through Weiner’s investigation hasn’t been announced, but one source said it was potentially in the thousands. We’ll update this story when we have more details.
