A North Carolina man died in mysterious circumstances during an encounter with a parole officer. Authorities have identified the deceased man as Lamont Perry, 32, of Wadesboro, North Carolina. The officer who was arresting Perry prior to his death has been named as 23-year-old William Kyle Torrence. The incident occurred on the night of October 27. Wadesboro is around 50 miles southeast of Charlotte.

1. No Shots Were Fired During Perry’s Arrest

No shots were fired during Perry’s arrest, reports WBTV. The station reports that parole officer, William Kyle Torrence had been trying to locate Perry due to a parole violation. The station reports that family members are saying Perry saw the officer in the area and fled from a home in Wadesboro. He ran to a nearby wooded area.

Police then contacted Perry’s girlfriend on the morning of October 28 to tell her that he had died, reports WSOC.


2. Perry Was Originally Arrest on Charges of Assaulting a Woman

Online records show that Perry was sentenced in September 2015 to parole following a conviction for assaulting a female. His girlfriend, who was not named, told WBTV:

It has been very hard. I have been crying and crying, screaming, and hollering. Just wanting my baby back. We have been together 7 years. We loved each other. We were planning on getting married…

I did not see too much other than when he was here with me. Waiting to hear exactly what happened before I start making any judgments or what not.

In a separate interview with WSOC, Perry’s girlfriend said, “I’m hurt and I just need some answers. I would never have thought about this in a million years.”


3. William Kyle Torrence Studied at Appalachian State University

William Torrence has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation. According to his Facebook page, Torrence has worked for the Anson County Probation Service since September 2014. He’s a graduate of Appalachian State University where he studied criminal justice. Torrence attended Anson Senior High School and is from Peachland, North Carolina.


4. Several Wadesboro Police Officers Were Present When Perry Died

North Carolina’s State Bureau of Investigation say that Torrence was making the arrest in the presence of several Wadesboro police officers, reports WBTV. The bureau are conducting a thorough investigation surrounding Perry’s death.
