Mike Pence and Tim Kaine went head-to-head during the first presidential debate on Tuesday, October 4th at Longwood University in Virginia.

In the debate, Pence arguably exhibited the better communication skills of the two men, appearing more calm and collected compared to Kaine, who continued to interrupt his opponent and was a bit more frustrated.

Pence tried to paint Kaine and Clinton as the same old thing whereas the Donald Trump campaign represents change. But overall, both men focused mainly on attacking the candidates at the top of the ticket, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, rather than attacking one another.

However, Pence was able to get in a few digs mocking Kaine for repeating the same rehearsed lines multiple times.

Here are some of Mike Pence’s key quotes from the debate:

“Senator, you and Hillary Clinton would know a lot about an insult-driven campaign.”

“There’s a reason why people doubt the trustworthiness of Hillary Clinton, and that’s because they’re paying attention.”

“[Tim Kaine]’s a very fitting running mate for Hillary Clinton because in the wake of a season when families are struggling in this economy…Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine want more of the same. It really is remarkable that they actually are advocating for $1 trillion in tax increases, more regulation, more of the same war on coal, and more of the same Obamacare that even now former president Bill Clinton calls a crazy plan.”

“Senator, do you take all the deductions you’re entitled to? I do!”

“Let me say, at the risk of agreeing with you, community policing is a great idea.”

“The potential is there to really change the direction of this country, but it is going to take leadership to do it.”

“What Donald Trump and I are saying is let’s not have the reflex of assuming the worst of men and women in law enforcement…law enforcement in this country is a force for good. They truly are people who put their lives on the line every single day.”

“Senator, we have a deportation force. It’s called Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”

“Did you work on that one a long time? Because that had a lot of creative lines in it.”

“Come on, senator. That was even beneath you and Hillary Clinton. And that’s pretty low.”
