An English dubbed video purportedly released by the Islamic State titled “And Allah will be sufficient for you against them” shows executions of US-backed, Free Syrian Army fighters and warns other Sunni Muslims not to join the FSA. The video comes from “Wilayat Furat,” Iraq, aka the “State of the Euphrates,” an ISIS-occupied area located north of Wilayat al-Anbar on the border of Syria.
Vulnerable cities in the region include “Haditha, Abu Kamal, ‘Anah, Rawa, Al-Qa’im, Al-Bukamal, Al-‘Ubaydi, Hajin, Abu Hamam, [and] Al-Khasfah.
The video begins with a message in English, which reads:
In this video production is a presentation of some recorded scenes documenting the source of the program to train the sahwat vetted by America in Jordan under the wings of the Crusader coalition forces. This is a small portion of what the sahwat left behind to become ghanimah in the hands of the Khilafah’s soldiers after they failed to advance on the city of Albu Kamal and their soldiers were either killed or driven out. And to Allah belongs all praise and favor.
According to the Long War Journal, “the Islamic State’s opponents… are part of the “sahwat,” meaning they are supposedly part of the “awakenings,” which received crucial assistance from the US during the fight against the Islamic State’s predecessor organization, al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).” Syria Direct further reports that the sahwat “stabbed ISIS in the back” and that has made them a target by the Islamic State. It is unclear which side the sahwat are fighting with or for now and if they still have American assistance or not.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, “Ghanimah” is “wealth taken by force from an enemy in times of war.”
The video opens footage of alleged US-airstrikes. It then cuts to footage showing a coalition advisor working with a Free Syrian Army leader, helping him work on his appearance for public relations.
The Free Syrian Army was founded in July 2011 as one of the first factions in the burgeoning Syrian Civil War. It was founded by Syrian Armed Forces who turned their backs on Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, and said that their mission was to see Assad be brought down.
The group eventually took a jihadist turn, and as of 2016 the Free Syrian Army “does not denote any form of coherent organization, but rather has become a promotional label which militia factions in the Syrian Civil War arbitrarily use or reject.”
However, the US continues to back these sectarian groups in the fight against the Islamic State.
The video then shows war footage of ISIS fighters taking on US-backed forces. After their alleged defeat in a battle, ISIS shows off the war spoils, or Ghanimah, they’ve collected.
A montage of executions is then shown.
Later, FSA soldiers are shown giving a “Nazi salute”, or “Sieg Heil.” The Sieg Heil became the official salute of the German National Socialist (Nazi) party in the 1920s. It later developed into the “Hitler salute” during the Third Reich. After the defeat of Germany in 1945, the public display of the Sieg Heil was made illegal in Germany and Austria. However, in the Middle East, it is known as the “Roman salute” and does not have the Nazi connotations connected with it.
At the end of the video, two jihadists deliver a speech accusing the USA of trying to take over the Middle East.
