In a new video purportedly released by the Islamic State titled “Lions of the Battlefield #4,” ISIS militants are shown conducting attacks on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and the Syrian Democratic Forces in “Wilayat Barakah,” Syria.
The video was released on ISIS terrorist channels on October 6 and is the fourth in the series of “Lions of the Battlefield.” The last snuff film in the series was released in May 2015 and also came from Wilayat Barakah.
Wilayat Barakah was claimed as an Islamic State province in April 2014, along with eight other Syrian provinces. The area is known for its large Kurdish population.
The video focuses on an attack on the PKK and the SDF.
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party is often anglicized as “PKK” because its Latinized name is “Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê.” The Kurdistan Workers’ Party oversees the armed wing of its organization known as the Kurdish People’s Defence Force (YPG). The PKK is currently a major force on the front lines fighting ISIS.
Kurds are ethnically different than Syrians despite sharing a nation state.
Kurds have also proven their reliability to effectively fight ISIS. Iraq’s ARA News reports:
Dozens of militant fighters from the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group have surrendered to the Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq, an official said on Wednesday. Peshmerga spokesman Qadir Qadir confirmed in a statement that dozens of ISIS members arrived on Wednesday evening to a Peshmerga-held area east of Mosul and handed over their weapons at a Kurdish security checkpoint.
