1. He Was Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer Two Months Ago
Two months ago, Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to People. He recently underwent prostate surgery, and is now in recovery. According to the outlet, Joe is already back at work– he’s heading to Japan to shoot the cover for Nation-Alist magazine next week. A source tells People, “He’s feeling great now and is optimistic. He’s felt so much love and support from his family and friends.”
Another source told ET, “This is a blessing in disguise for Joe. It has opened his eyes to eating healthier and exercising. This diagnosis has brought Joe and his family together and reminded him that what matters most is family.” The source revealed that Jessica and Ashlee were devastated by the news of their father’s diagnosis, but have been behind him every step of the way.
2. He Is a Photographer
Over the past couple years, Simpson has been working as a photographer. According to US Magazine, his recent clients have included Heather Locklear and Richie Sambora’s daughter, Ava Sambora. In an interview last year with US, Simpson discussed his passion for photography.
Growing up, we were poor. My mom was always giving us art projects, things to do that we could afford. So at 14, she gave me a camera, and I talked her into helping me with a little darkroom in our garage. I started developing pictures, and I worked my way through college shooting sports, shooting weddings — in fact, I shot my own wedding. Tina’s wedding photo was done by me because we couldn’t afford any other way.
Simpson later added on, “… photography for me allows me to be just Joe Simpson again. I’m not riding the shirttails of my children; I’m not making money off my children. It’s just me, doing my art.”
In May, he showcased his artwork at a gallery exhibit at the Bruce Lurie Gallery in Los Angeles. A cut of the proceeds went towards Adopt the Arts. You can check out Joe Simson’s photography website here.
3. He Is a Former Youth Minister
Before becoming his daughters’ manager, Simpson served as a Baptist minister at the Heights Baptist Church in Richardson, Texas. In 2007, he went on to produce a TV show, Women’s Murder Club, for ABC. Since then, he has worked as a movie producer and record label executive.
4. He and Tina Simpson Divorced in 2012
In October 2012, Joe divorced his wife (Ashlee and Jessica’s mom) Tina Simpson, after 34 years of marriage.
The two tied the knot in 1978, when Joe was 20 and Tina was 18, according to TMZ.
5. He Was Rumored to Have Been Dating a 21-Year-Old Male Model
After he and Tina’s divorce, rumors surfaced that Joe was gay and had come out to his family. An article in the National Inquirer claimed that an insider told them that Joe had come out of the closet, telling his family he couldn’t stay in his marriage any longer.
Radar Online went as far as claiming that Joe was having an affair with male model Bryce Chandler Hill, who was 21 at the time. “Fresh-faced Bryce Chandler Hill… has been bragging about dating 54-year-old Joe on/off for around a year and has recounted torrid details of their alleged trysts to various friends around West Hollywood.”
After speaking with his reps, though, People wrote that the split was “amicable and there is no third party involved.” Joe himself shot down the rumors, saying that the stories were “ridiculous” and untrue.
