In a new video purportedly released by the Islamic State titled “Victory Comes With Patience,” ISIS militants south of Mosul in “Wilayat Dijlah” are shown battling coalition forces with guns and suicide bombers. The video was released on ISIS terrorist channels on November 4.

Wilayat Dijlah means “State of the Tigris” and was coined by ISIS when they began to occupy the river valley region in 2014. According to the Terrorism Research & Analsysis Consortium, cities in the area that are vulnerable to the terrorist organization include “Al-Shirqat, Al-Qayyarah, Tel Reem, Mt. Makhoul, Al-Zab, Tulul al-Baj, Azawiyyah, Sadiyrah, Al-Mujmu’at, Halabiya Village, [and] Makhmur.”

Last month, the American coalition, consisting of the Iraqi Army, the Kurdish Peshmerga, Shia militias, Christian militias, and the Turkish Nineveh Guard, descended upon Mosul to free it from the Islamic State. The official operation began on October 17 when it was announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Since then, other battles have popped up all over Iraq in an effort by the Islamic State to draw coalition resources away Mosul. Wilayat Dijlah, just south of the Mosul, is no exception. One of the main roads from the government-held capital of Baghdad, Iraq runs through the region.

CNN reports that there are about 5,000 ISIS militants in Mosul facing nearly 109,000 troops.

Yesterday, Iraqi troops entered Mosul from the east for the first time after fighting through the ISIS-held outskirts. Reuters reports, “Islamic State fighters kept up on Wednesday their fierce defense of the southern approaches to Mosul, which has held up Iraqi troops there…”

In the new video, ISIS militants are seen attacking coalition forces south of Mosul. Tactics shown include suicide bombers driving VBIEDs, or vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices. ISIS films these suicide attacks for propagandic purposes with the aid of drones.

It is unclear when the footage from the battles comes from.
