Officials in Chattanooga, Tennessee said Monday night that there are "multiple fatalities" in a deadly school bus crash on Talley Road. WREG reports first reported that there at least 12 children were killed in the crash, but officials caution that this is not the final number. Officials later told the Associated Press that there are six confirmed fatalities. That number was later lowered to five. Bus driver Jonthony Walker was charged with five counts of vehicular homicide.
The fire department, which shared several photos of the scene on Twitter, arrived just before 4 p.m. ET on Monday. There were 35 students on the bus, all from Woodmore Elementary School. At least 23 of the children were taken to an area hospital, the Times Free Press reported.
The crash occurred when the bus hit a utility pole and wrapped around a tree. It was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Police told WREG that the bus driver is cooperating and it is unclear what caused the crash.
Chattanooga mayor Andy Berke wrote on Twitter, "Please pray for the families of those affected by this horrible accident."
