President Obama spoke from the White House this afternoon, encouraging Democrats to keep their spirits high after a crushing defeat on Tuesday.
Obama said that he congratulated president-elect Trump at 3:00 in the morning, inviting him to the White House on Thursday to ensure a peaceful transition of power. Although Obama has always discussed Trump as being fundamentally different from previous Republican candidates, Obama suggested Wednesday that this upcoming hand-off isn’t all that different from Bush handing the reigns to Obama in 2008.
The president went on to say that he’s rooting for Trump’s success, saying that the transition of power is fundamental to the Democratic process.
“Everyone is sad when their side loses an election,” Obama said. “But the day after, we have to remember that we’re all on one team. This is an intramural scrimmage.”
Obama also suggested that he believes Trump wants the best for the country and that he truly wants to unite the nation, even if the two of them have, as Obama put it, profound disagreements. For an election that has been unlike any other, thus far, the day after has unfolded precisely like every other.
Moving on from Trump, Obama said that he is incredibly proud of Hillary Clinton, saying that her nomination was historic and that he’s confident that she will continue to do great work for people around the world.
