Valerie Fairman, known for appearing on MTV’s reality show 16 and Pregnant, has died at age 23, TMZ reports. Her family informed the outlet that the cause of death appears to be an overdose.
The Chester County Coroner tells E! Online that Fairman’s death is still under investigation.
Valerie’s mother says that the 16 and Pregnant star was at a friend’s house in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, and when the friend called for Valerie, who was in the bathroom, she did not respond, according to TMZ. The friend then kicked down the door, where she found Valerie unresponsive.
TMZ writes that toxicology tests are being conducted and will determine the exact cause of death.
Fairman has struggled with drug problems– which were documented on the MTV show– and has been arrested in the past. In 2015, People reported that she had been arrested for prostitution along with seven other women after authorities received complaints of prostitution in the area. “According to law enforcement, Fairman was in New Castle, Delaware, when she allegedly offered to perform a sexual act on an undercover officer in exchange for money.” The arrest was a joint operation involving the Delaware State Police New Castle County Governor’s Task Force, Delaware State Police New Castle County Drug Unit, the New Castle County Police Department, and the Wilmington Police Department. TMZ also reports that Fairman was “busted” last week for resisting arrest and providing false ID to law enforcement. She tried to run from the police, but was subdued.
Fairman was a high school sophomore living in Pennsylvania when she gave birth to her daughter, Nevaeh. TMZ reports that Nevaeh, now 7, is currently at home with Valerie’s mother. E! News spoke with Janice, Valerie’s mother, who told the outlet that Naveah is coping well. “I have her child [Naveah], I’ve had custody of her. She’s doing very well. She wanted to go to school because of the parties today so I let her go to school, and the counselor said she’s doing very well. She talked to her twice. She’s surrounded by support and friends.”
Many of Fairman’s fellow TV stars and fans have gone to Twitter to express their condolences.
