WATCH: James Comey Says No Evidence of Obama Wiretapping Trump Tower

FBI Director James “Jim” Comey said at a hearing in front of the House Intelligence Committee on March 20 that there is “no information” showing that former President Barack Obama wiretapped President Donald Trump during the election cycle.

Watch the video above to hear Comey publicly comment on the matter for the first time.

Comey was questioned on the situation after Trump said on Twitter in early March that Obama had taken part in wiretapping his lines at Trump Tower during the presidential election.

As recently as March 17, Trump stuck to the accusations that Obama was secretly listening in on conversations.

The March 20 hearing on Capitol Hill put Comey and National Security Agency Director Adm. Michael Rogers in front of committee members to answer questions about the Russia probe. It opened with Rep. Devin Nunes (R-California) — the committee’s chairman — saying that the group itself has found that there was no “physical wiretap of Trump Tower.” He asked that Comey and Rogers reveal if there was improper surveillance of Trump’s campaign officials and also stressed the importance of finding out who leaked classified information to media members.

Numerous current and former officials have leaked purportedly classified information in connection to these questions. We aim to determine who has leaked or facilitated leaks of classified information so that these individuals can be brought to justice.

Later in the hearing and during Comey’s opening statement, he confirmed that the FBI is investigating the Trump campaign’s alleged ties to the Russian government.

“The FBI, as part of our counterintelligence effort, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election,” he said.

Comey added that it’s not normal that the FBI confirms or denies such investigations, but the circumstances surrounding this specific one were of public interest.

The White House issued a statement via email shortly after Comey’s statement saying that as it stands, there is still “no evidence” of Russia’s ties to Trump’s campaign.

Nothing has changed. Senior Obama intelligence officials have gone on record to confirm there is NO EVIDENCE of Trump-Russia collusion and there is NO EVIDENCE of a Trump-Russia scandal.

As everyone forgets the press citing wiretapping as “sources” last year.

Per Kellyanne Conway campaign Tweet: “.@KellyannePolls on HRC: “If you’re under your 2nd FBI investigation in the same year then you do have a…corruption & an ethics problem.”

Looks like Donnie Boy has a “corruption and an ethics problem.”

Yeah, but it was the NY Times … and other fake news outlets that reported it, so they can’t be trusted, per Donnie himself. Oh yeah, there was Fix News’ Judge Napolitano, but Fox yanked him off the air after Donnie tried to shift the blame his way.

Misleading error of categorization. On the general category of surveillance, Comey stated that the entire Trump campaign was under surveillance since July. On a particular example of surveillance, he states that Obama did not order Trump tower to be wiretapped. This issue of miscategorization needs to be clarified by Comey.

add: Remember, Trump never intended the literal use of the term wiretapped, but qualified it with quotation marks as “wires tapped”. That’s why this miscategorization by the FBI Director is so important.

Oh please –stop defending a wrong! The President of the U.S. is either responsible for what he says, or he should resign. Your continued excuses for this Liar-in-Chief are not only an exhausting amalgam of ennui, but frigging dangerous to our peace and prosperity to America and the world!

Trump, the old blowhard, only qualified his remarks once the walls started closing in on him, and he realized that wouldn’t be able to bully his way out of his latest lie. He needs to double down on his meds!

Definition of terms is so important in Congressional hearings. When Republicans are using the word “wiretap” to represent all forms of surveillance, including investigation, but the FBI Director is using the term “wiretap” to mean the precise action of recording conversations from privately-owned landline telephones, then there will be problems. Trump stated that he got his information from the New York Times article which headlined the word “Wiretapped Data” but then discussed that the data was collected by investigation, never mentioning the precise action of ‘wiretapping’. So in this respect, even the New York Times allows for the general category of surveillance to be synonymous with the term “Wiretap”.

I think that Congress should have been more precise in its questioning, to ask Comey to define his terms whenever they were used. They should have learned from President Bill Clinton, who took things to an extreme by stating, “It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.”

No, YOU stop. The press is using the term Wiretap, to be synonymous with all kinds of surveillance and even the word SPYING. But the FBI doesn’t use it like that. Wiretapping is a specific type of eavesdropping technique. That’s what Comey was addressing. So Congress should have asked him to define his terms.

Yes, yes, it’s always “the press.” I WATCHED the hearings, and it WASNT THE PRESS.” Donnie’s lies are finally starting to cost him … guess his need for self-importance is more important to him than his sense of self-preservation!

@Anonymous at 10:11 a.m. There’s a term for what you’re doing–it’s called pettifogging … and anybody with a room-temperature IQ can see through it !

@1:12 – You don’t understand that miscategorization is a logical fallacy in which subterms or species are conflated into their general groups or families? Go read Aristotle, or look up categorization on Wiki if you can’t handle the classics.

Wiretapping is a specific kind of surveillance, just as an apple is a specific kind of fruit.

If you ask Director Comey, “Are there any forms of surveillance that are NOT covered by the term “wiretapping”? And he will answer “Yes!”
