WATCH: Donald Trump in April Says He Has Confidence in James Comey

During a White House press briefing today, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that President Donald Trump decided to fire James Comey after losing confidence in him over a period of several months.

But just a few weeks ago, Donald Trump said he has full confidence in Comey.

“I have confidence in him,” Trump said in an interview with Fox Business. “We’ll see what happens. It’s going to be interesting…Don’t forget, when Jim Comey came out, he saved Hillary Clinton. People don’t realize that. He saved her life.”

Sean Spicer on Tuesday, May 9th, just hours before Comey was fired, said that he has no reason to believe that Donald Trump doesn’t have full confidence in James Comey.

“I have no reason to believe….I have not asked him,” Spicer said on Tuesday. “I have not asked the president since the last time we spoke about this.”

The last time they spoke about this was on May 3rd, Spicer said, “The president has confidence in the director.”

On Wednesday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked why Trump fired Comey supposedly because of the way he handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation, even when Trump had previously praised Comey’s handling of the case. The deputy press secretary said that Trump was a candidate then and he is president now.

“He was a candidate, not the president,” she said. “The circumstances certainly change when you become the president.”
