One day after a fire ripped through the 24-floor Grenfell Tower in London, stories of survival are being reported. According to the Daily Mail, the blaze started after a refrigerator exploded. Flames lit up the night sky as residents frantically tried to get out of the building. At one point, people reported seeing bed sheets being tied together, used as makeshift ropes to help people climb out windows. One man even made some kind of parachute in an effort to escape the smoke and flames. It’s unknown if he made it to the ground safely.
A witness named Samira Lamrani spoke out about what she saw at the frightening scene. She recalled seeing someone “on the ninth or tenth floor” toss a baby out of a window. Lamrani said that a man on the ground came forward out of a crowd of people and caught the child.
“People were starting to appear at the windows, frantically banging and screaming. The windows were slightly ajar, a woman was gesturing that she was about to throw her baby and if somebody could catch her baby. Somebody did, a gentleman ran forward and managed to grab the baby,” Lamrani told the Daily Mail. It is unknown if the baby was okay.

More people have spoken to the media about children being thrown from windows.
A woman by the name of Zara saw another child thrown from the fifth floor.
“One woman actually threw her son out of the window. I think he’s OK. I think he might have just had some broken bones and bruises,” the woman said.
Onlooker Joe Walsh saw another woman throw two children out the window.
“I saw the parent throw two kids out of the window. I don’t know where they landed because I was on the other side. I doubt anyone caught them, I hope they did,” he told BBC News.
So far, emergency personnel have confirmed that 12 people have died in the blaze.
