WATCH: Venus Williams’ Car Crash Surveillance Video

Palm Beach Gardens Police have released surveillance video showing Venus Williams’ fatal crash on June 9. Williams’ SUV collided with a car driven by Linda Barsons. Linda’s husband, Jerome Barsons, 78, was hospitalized and died on June 22, which was Linda’s 68th birthday. They had been married for over 33 years.

The tragic crash can be seen in the video embedded above, right around the 6:40-6:44 mark, in the upper left hand corner. The crash is partially obscured by the timestamp.

The police said in a press release that Williams had lawfully entered the intersection before the crash.

After the initial investigation was conducted, new evidence into the incident was located. Video surveillance footage was obtained from a community south of the intersection which recorded the traffic crash. Based on the evidence obtained in the ongoing investigation, it has been determined the vehicle driven by Venus Williams lawfully entered the intersection on a circular green traffic signal…”

Police said she attempted to drive north through the intersection to BallenIsles Drive. A Nissan Altima entered the intersection traveling north, while Williams was traveling through the intersection. The Altima made a left turn in front of Williams, causing her to stop to avoid a collision.

The statement continues:

After the Nissan had proceeded past Williams, Williams then started to proceed north through the intersection in accordance with F.S.S. 316.075 (1)(a)1. The vehicle driven by Linda Barson was traveling west on Northlake Blvd, in the outside lane, approaching a steady red traffic signal. The traffic signal then cycled to green, at which time Barson continued westbound and entered the intersection. The front end of Barson’s vehicle collided with the right front of William’s vehicle. This updated information, based upon new evidence, is still under investigation.”

A police report released before the surveillance video was found had said that Williams was at fault for violating the right of way of the other driver, although she wasn’t issued any citations or traffic violations. Now police are saying she had lawfully entered the intersection. A lawsuit was filed against Williams, seeking damages for reckless driving.

Williams felt so much grief over the crash that she broke down crying about it during a Wimbledon press conference:
