Meijer was founded in Greenville, Michigan, in 1934 by Hendrik Meijer, a barber who decided to enter the grocery business during the Great Depression. The chain was among the first to offer self-service shopping, and by the 1960s, over two dozen Meijer stores operated throughout Western Michigan.
As of 2015, Meijer was the 26th largest retailer in the US, with stores open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year and closing only on Christmas Day. Many Meijer locations include a gas station and convenience store. In November, Supermarket News ranked Meijer #15 in the 2016 Top 75 U.S. & Canadian Food Retailers & Wholesalers.
Today, Meijer grocery store chains run in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
