As of October, 2016, there were 460 Trader Joe’s stores in 41 states and Washington DC. The chain was started in 1958 by Joe Cuolombe, and the first store with the name “Trader Joe’s” opened in 1967 in Pasadena, California. When John Shields took over as the company’s CEO in 1987, the franchise expanded beyond California and into Arizona. The first Trader Joe’s to hit the East Coast was opened in 1996.
A 2010 article in Fortune describes Trader Joe’s as “an offbeat, fun discovery zone that elevates food shopping from a chore to a cultural experience.” The outlet adds on that in the 2009, the company’s total sales were approximately the same size as Whole Foods’ and larger than those of Bed Bath & Beyond.
