Olympic swimming hero Michael Phelps was arrested in Baltimore on DUI charges on September 29. He’s been charged with speeding and crossing double lane lines.

Here’s what we know so far:


1. TMZ Says He Was Twice the Legal Limit

According to TMZ, Phelps was twice the legal limit when he was given a sobriety test. He was pulled over by cops at around 1:40 a.m. while he was driving his white Land Rover. TMZ says he was doing 84 in a 45.

Police are preparing a statement on this arrest.


2. This Is His Second DUI Arrest

In 2004, Phelps was arrested on DUI charges in Maryland for which he received 18 months probation. He was just 19 then.


3. Phelps Has Been Pictured Smoking a Bong in the Past

In the past, Phelps has been pictured smoking a bong. The swimming legend expressed his regret for that incident in a statement:

I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.

4. Phelps Is Back in Training

In August 2014, Phelps announced that he was coming out of retirement and would compete again.


5. Phelps Takes in 12,000 Calories Per Day

It well-known that due to his high-level of training, Phelps needs a diet that includes around 12,000 calories. Though the swimmer has never said how many of those calories are taken up by booze. This piece on Phelps from 2012 details shows that he likes to drink with his mom.
