Six-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson didn’t have to worry about his now-wife, Chandra Janway, being afraid of being in the spotlight when they first started dating. The former New York model was already in one of her own.

Now, the couple are married, have two children and share a spotlight.

Here’s what you need to know about Janway:


1. Janway is a Former Model

An Oklahoma native and graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Janway moved to New York after her 2000 graduation to pursue a career in modeling, according to Sporting News. While there, she worked for Wilhelmina, one of the most successful agencies in the industry.

However, as an UO alum, Janway is a huge fan of Sooners football and brought Johnson to their games as she tried to convert him.


2. Johnson Proposed to Janway in Colorado on a Snowboard Trip

Johnson popped the question in 2003, a year after the two met through mutual friends, while on a snowboard trip in Colorado, according to Sporting News.

Johnson went as far as having a photographer with them to capture the moment, and Janway still thought he was joking. But, she still said yes when he finally asked at the top of the mountain.

The couple married a year later in St. Bart’s, an island in the Caribbean.


3. The Couple Have 2 Daughters

Janway and Johnson are the proud parents of 4-year-old Genevieve, “Evie,” and 1-year-old Lynda.

Evie has made plenty of appearances on the sidelines of her dad’s races, and Johnson tweeted a picture of her own helmet.

4. Janway’s Brother Died in a Skydiving Accident

In March, 2014, Janway’s brother, Jordan, died in a skydiving accident. Jordan, 27, was an instructor had jumped over 1000 times, according to USA Today.

Jordan collided with another diver during the jump and was knocked unconscious. Due to his experience, he wasn’t required to use a chip that would automatically open his parachute.

JimmieJohnson.com released a statement, saying:

The Johnsons are saddened by the tragic passing of Chandra’s brother, Jordan Janway, 27. Jordan was an incredible son, brother, uncle and friend and will be dearly missed. Please keep the Janway family in your thoughts and prayers. The family asks for privacy at this time.


5. Janway Enjoys the Traveling Involved with NASCAR

Janway told Sporting News that she enjoys the traveling involved with NASCAR and being able to see her husband do what he loves.

I like a lot of things about it. Especially that my husband gets to do what he loves. We also like that we get to travel and go to fun cities. … I get nervous when he’s possibly going to win. And of course I do get concerned when he crashes, but I know how safe the cars are.
