Jamaica faces Mexico in the 2015 Gold Cup Final in a match few people expected to see. Mexico’s appearance comes with little surprise, but Jamaica reached the Final after a shocking 2-1 defeat of the United States in Atlanta. Jamaica has had an impressive tournament run including winning Group B.
Mexico has not looked quite as impressive. They finished second in Group C and are coming off a controversial late win against Panama. The winner of this match will face the United States in a one game playoff for the right to represent CONCACAF in the 2017 Conferations Cup in Russia. The first allowed Mexico to tie the match 1-1 on a penalty kick at the end of regulation to send the match into extra time. During the additional period, Mexico benefited from an additional whistle and scored another penalty kick to win the match 2-1.
Jamaica Preview
Many expected the United States to be facing Mexico in the tournament final. However, Jamaica defeated the United States 2-1 in front of a stunned crowd at the Georgia Dome. Jamaica’s roster has many MLS players including the Houston Dynamo’s Giles Barnes. Barnes has been crucial to Jamaica’s success, especially with key goals in past two matches.
Jamaica enters the match as a slight favorite. Something that would have been quite far-fetched when the tournament started. It will be interesting to see whether Jamaica can ride their momentum to a Gold Cup Championship. A Jamaica win would mean a rematch with the United States for the right to play in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
