Real Madrid will being their quest for a 33rd La Liga title and first since 2011/2012 this weekend, but Los Blancos remain second-choice to Barcelona as the season begins.

Real’s first opponents are Sporting Gijon, who were promoted to La Liga last season by finishing second in the Segunda division. 18-year-old center back Jorge Mere is a hot prospect for Gijon; he’s already a Spanish U-21 international and spent his youth in the Real Madrid system. Gijon spent four seasons in La Liga before relegation in 2012.

Real Madrid added Inter midfielder Mateo Kovacic to their ranks during the week, and the 21-year-old has a chance to start in the match against Sporting Gijon.
