Villarreal finished sixth in La Liga in 2014-2015, but a good start to the season was ruined as the year turned to 2015. Villarreal ended their 2014-2015 La Liga schedule with a 4-0 humbling at Athletic Bilbao and they scored more than one goal in only two of their last 15 games of the season. The big transfer move for Villarreal was the loss of top scorer Luciano Vietto to Atletico Madrid and the side are still looking for a replacement for the young Argentine, potentially Roberto Soldado. Villarreal have also added Samu Castillejo and Samuel, while losing Giovanni dos Santos to the LA Galaxy.

Villareal plays three teams that qualified for European play from La Liga within their first 10 games- Athletic Bilbao on September 20, Atletico Madrid on September 27, and Sevilla on October 28- and play Barcelona in their 11th game of the season on November 1, 2015. The biggest fixture of the season for Villareal, one that could go far to decide a Champions League birth, is on May 1, 2016 when Villareal travels to Valencia.
