In the 31st minute of Barcelona’s opening La Liga fixture against Athletic Bilbao, Messi was given a great opportunity to open his and Barcelona’s account. Athletic goalie Gorka Iraizoz Moreno had other ideas.
Messi has struggled with penalties over the last several seasons for both club and country.
Luis Suarez drew the penalty on what looked to be a clean tackle from the Athletic Bilbao defender.
Athletic Bilbao defeated Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate for the Spanish Super Cup earlier this week.
