Robert Vinci did the impossible. She beat Serena Williams in the US Open semifinals, ending the World No. 1’s quest for a calendar grand slam.

Interviewees are so often stale with their answers, especially when they have to be interviewed just moments after a match or game. Yet Vinci, who was caught up in understandable emotion just seconds before she had to talk with Tom Rinaldi, was the opposite of stale.
The American fans were undoubtedly disappointed to see Serena come up short of history, but Vinci certainly won over a lot of those same fans by simply being herself.
You can bet she’ll be the new fan favorite on Saturday when she takes on compatriot Flavia Pennetta for the title at Flushing Meadows.
