Why Is the Oklahoma & Oklahoma State Game Called Bedlam?

During rivalry week, the term “Bedlam” is often thrown around. The Oklahoma and Oklahoma State game is referred to as Bedlam.

The term does not just refer to the football game but any matchup in any sport between the two schools.

The origin of the series name is more difficult to discern. According to NewsOk, there is no consensus as to where the name came from.

The publication cites an excerpt from The Oklahoman describing a football game between the two schools in 1917:

So surprised were students, faculty members and citizens when they first heard the 9 to 0 victory story from Oklahoma City that confirmation was necessary. Then bedlam broke loose. Nine long shrieks of the college power plant whistle told the score. Guns were fired. The antique, dust-covered bell in old Central building belfry chimed for the first time in years. Literally the town was painted white. On buildings, sidewalks, windows and other places, the score was painted. A huge figure nine and a tiny naught.”

It was not until a 1943 basketball game between the two schools when the term “Bedlam Series” was used. The term has been associated between the two schools for quite some time.

The 2015 matchup has even more significance as the winner will be the Big 12 champions in addition to state bragging rights.
