Two of the NFL’s newest signal-callers face off when the Jaguars host the Titans in a pivotal AFC South matchup. The Titans may be 2-7, but they’re 1-1 after replacing head coach Ken Whisenhunt with Mike Mularkey, who coached the Jaguars in 2012 and was fired after just one season.

This, of course, is the third Thursday game to be broadcast on the NFL Network, which has the exclusive national broadcast rights for the rest of the regular season. It’s the second week using the NFL’s “Color Rush” alternate uniforms. The Jaguars will wear gold, while the Titans will be decked out in powder blue.

Game Preview: Mike Mularkey didn’t really get a fair shot in Jacksonville. He took over at the team’s lowest, and struggled with one of the NFL’s least talented squads. Mularkey went 2-14 with the Jaguars in 2012, and was fired after the team lost its final five games. Mularkey told reporters this week that he doesn’t want the focus to be on his return.

“I just want these guys to win,” he said. “That’s important to me. It has nothing to do with who we’re playing. It’s just a matter of winning.”

Winning is what Mularkey did as soon as he took over the Titans. After Marcus Mariota returned from a knee injury, he and Mularkey led the Titans to a dramatic 34-28 victory, breaking the team’s six-game losing streak.

The Titans have played better with Mariota in the lineup, and Mularkey wants to keep it that way. Before he took over, Mariota had been sacked 19 times in his first five games. He’s gone down only once in two games under Mularkey.
