Running back Chris Ivory will try to lead the New York Jets to a win against the host Dallas Cowboys in a Saturday Night Football betting matchup.
The Jets, one of the three teams tied for the AFC Wild Card spots, are listed as 3-point betting favorites against the struggling Cowboys at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. New York is 3-0 straight up and against the spread in its last three games.
The Jets, who are 8-5 SU and 7-5-1 ATS under rookie coach Todd Bowles, are 0-3 ATS in their last three matchups against the Cowboys. However, Ivory is coming off a 100-yard rushing game and is facing a defense that gave up 124 yards to Green Bay RB Eddie Lacy last week. The Jets have subsisted on being balanced, fashioning a +5 takeaway/giveaway ratio while QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has forced defenses to pick a poison between WR Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall.
The Jets, who are 5-0 ATS in their last five games in December, also boast the NFL’s stingiest run defense at 78.9 yards per game. Core defenders such as DE Muhummad Wilkerson and ILB David Harris have made New York stout against the run. The Jets, at least based on Dallas’ recent showings, don’t have to be overly concerned about a downfield passing game.
The Cowboys, who at 4-9 both SU and ATS and still mathematically alive in the NFC East race, are capable of beating midlevel teams even with Matt Cassel starting at quarterback. Veteran RB Darren McFadden, who has a shot at a 1,000-yard season, has been a virtual one-man offense.
To get the upset, the Cowboys will need to establish WR Dez Bryant, who will be matched up on the CB combo of Antonio Cromartie and Marcus Williams. Bryant had only one catch for nine yards against Green Bay. The Dallas defense is not a major culprit for the Cowboys being 2-9 SU and 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games. Neither of starting CB Brandon Carr and Byron Jones is elite, and the Cowboys have a paltry six interceptions as they head into game where they could stand to win the turnover battle.
The total for Saturday night’s Jets vs. Cowboys betting matchup is set at 41.5 points at the sportsbooks. The total has gone UNDER in nine of the Jets’ last 10 games as road favorites in December. The total has gone OVER in seven of the Cowboys’ last 10 games at home in December.
The OddsShark Computer is projecting a 22.2-19.4 Jets victory.
