Iman Shumpert can, apparently, do it all.
The Cleveland Cavaliers standout is not only a lockdown defender on the court, he’s also got the makings of a future doctor. Shumpert sprung into action on Wednesday morning when his fiance Teyana Taylor went into labor.
The pair wasn’t able to get to the hospital in time and, according to multiple reports, Shumpert stepped in and delivered the baby himself.
“It took two ten count pushes with my fiancé playing Dr and she entered this world into his bare hands!” Taylor said.
It’s just another momentous occasion for the pair who have been together for years and faced their own share of romantic ups and downs. Here’s everything you need to know about the couple:
1. Shumpert Used His Headphones to Tie the Baby’s Umbilical Cord
On Dec 16th at 6:42am in our bathroom Junie decided she wanted to take her first breath into this world. She came out as a wonderful surprise to everyone! Not knowing I was in labor until I felt her head…it took two ten count pushes with my fiancé playing Dr and she entered this world into his bare hands! Eyes full of tears and barely able to speak to the emergency operator @imanshumpert tied a pair of red headphones around the umbilical cord and the ambulance made there grand entrance 5 min later. She opened her eyes right away, gazed into mine and never cried! He handed her to me wrapped in our bath towel and wiped her face for me to see what LOVE really is. She has blown Christmas away! Our family is complete. Her blueprint will be unmatched. Welcome Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. Mommy carried you. Daddy delivered you. #MeetTheParents we love you baby girl💂🏾🐞👶🏾
According to a report by TMZ, Shumpert was more than ready to step into the role of OBGYN on Wednesday morning. In fact, he was even managed to use his own household items to make the most of the situation.
That includes headphones.
Taylor told TMZ that Shumpert, who was on the phone with emergency operators throughout the delivery, used a pair of red headphones to tie off his daughter’s umbilical cord. It seems the couple didn’t have medical grade clamps just lying around the house.
It’s an incredible situation, but Taylor added that it only made the birth of their daughter that much more special. She said:
She opened her eyes right away, gazed into mine and never cried!
She has blown Christmas away! Our family is complete. Her blueprint will be unmatched. Welcome Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. Mommy carried you. Daddy delivered you.
Welcome to the world, little Iman.
2. Taylor & Shumpert Announced They Were Engaged This Year
After announcing that they were expecting a child together, Shumpert and Taylor made it official when they got engaged in November, 2015.
The proposal was entirely unexpected, at least for Taylor, and happened during her baby shower at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland. Check out this ring:
🌹 "Before your love baby I was muddy So deep with pain till you took it from me/ You showered me with a new beginning Now I'm clean/ Took me by surprise when you ran up on me, I came to life baby in that moment/ You put your hands on my heart and baby now it beats" Thank You @imanshumpert for putting the color back in my life! I love you so much 🌹 & thank you @monicabrown for those beautiful lyrics. You spoke to my soul girl! 😘
Both Shumpert and Taylor took to their respective social media accounts to share their happiness with fans and the Cavs star was particularly romantic. “When a man loves a woman how she was born to be loved…procreation is the best blessing you can receive!” Shumpert wrote on social media. “I couldn’t be more happy than to share my first child with the woman I intended to have my family with.”
3. Taylor Appeared in Shumpert’s Music Video in 2015
He’s not just a basketball star.
Shumpert might make his money on the court, but his passion (much like Taylor’s) rests in the music world and the two joined forces there in September. Taylor, who has released several of her own R&B albums, appeared in her fiance’s video for his song “Promised.”
The video, which was directed by Sasha Samsonova, focuses on Shumpert’s relationship with Taylor and the two even wrote the song together. He told Skrillionaire:
The crazy thing about it is when I was writing it, I was speaking figuratively. I wrote this song about a year-and-a-half ago. Teyana didn’t add her part until right before the playoffs last year. With everything that was going on it just started to line up in my mind, I kind of envisioned what was happening and timed it up accordingly.
“Promised” is reportedly just the first single on Shumpert’s upcoming musical project, Home Grown, which he’s currently working on.
4. The Pair Accused the FOX Hit ‘Empire’ of Ripping Off Their Life
Every week thousands of people turn their TVs to the FOX hit Empire. Two people not doing that? Shumpert and Taylor.
The couple made headlines in March 2015 when they criticized the show for stealing their look, even going so far as to suggest that the character Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) was based on Shumpert.
In the series, Hakeem also dated a girl named Tiana, an R&B singer and danger who was also similar to Taylor. When asked about the seeming similarities, Shumpert was quick to agree it was strange, saying:
They’re using my girl’s character, her style, her look and she’s not getting anything for it. They didn’t even change her name. They could have at least let my girl audition for the part instead of stealing her character completely. And come on man, they’re really using a guy with a flat-top like me. Come on. That’s ridiculous. They never called us. We were blindsided. We found out by our family and fans when the show aired.
The controversy eventually boiled down to nothing and, as fans of Empire know, Hakeem isn’t even dating Tiana any more.
5. This Is the First Child For Both Shumpert & Taylor
Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr. came into the world unexpectedly, but her parents were already anxious to meet their first child when they officially announced they were expecting in September, 2015.
Shumpert was the first to confirm the news, writing:
I couldn’t be more happy than to share my first child with the woman I intended to have my family with. I love you @teyanataylor thank you for your sacrifice in starting our very own family! P.s. I know you see my daughter with her hand behind her head and her feet kicked up…she’s already daddy’s little girl!!!
After announcing the impending arrival of their first child, both Shumprt and Taylor have been frequent updates throughout the pregnancy. Taylor regularly posted photos of her growing baby bump on her Instagram account.
