Wayne Rooney scored an important goal today for Manchester United, but it was also noteworthy for Rooney’s career. The United captain slotted home the only goal in United’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool today, putting his club ahead of West Ham and just one spot outside the top four. It was also Rooney’s 176th in a United shirt, giving him the most Premier League goals by a single player for a single team.

Rooney now has five goals in his club’s first four fixtures in January. It’s helped United break out of a dreadful winless streak, and after six without a win they’ve now won two of three.

At the top, Manchester City took care of business, notching three points to put pressure on Arsenal in the standings. Arsenal usually have trouble at the Britannia, but seem to have things under control early against Stoke. Leicester continued to slip, only mustering a 1-1 draw against relegation leader Aston Villa.

The Premier League week concludes on Monday, when Watford face Swansea City.
