Shane Lowry separated himself from the field at the U.S. Open at the end of his third round on Sunday morning at Oakmont Country Club.

The 29-year-old Irishman only has one PGA Tour victory, but finds himself as the favorite to win with a four-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round. Lowry is seven under par after a career-low round of 65 in the third round.

“I beat a field of this quality already,” Lowry said in an interview Saturday night after playing 32 holes at 5-under, “So there’s no reason I can’t go out and do it again tomorrow.”

1. A Win at the U.S. Open Would be an Upset, but He Has a Strong Track Record

Lowry won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2015 and has also won two times on the PGA European Tour.

The Offaly man doesn’t have immense experience at the U.S. Open, this year marking his fourth, but he has had a solid showing in his appearances. Having missed the cut in 2011 and again in 2014, Lowry contended in Chambers Bay last year where he finished tied-ninth, thanks to strong rounds of 69-70-70-71.

He shot an impressive first-round 68 at this year’s Masters, putting him T-2 after Thursday. He also finished tied at 16th at this year’s Players Championship.


2. He Claimed First Prize Money of $1,570,000 at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

It pays to play the World Golf Championships. Lowry’s win at the 2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational brought the 29-year-old Irishman an immense sense of pride, as well as financial opportunity.

The victory brought many tangible rewards in terms of money, world rankings, PGA Tour playing rights, European Tour playing rights and sponsorship revenues.

WGC- Bridgestone Invitational’s first prize money of $1,570,000 is the biggest Lowry has earned since turning pro in 2009. He also earned a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour.


3. He’s Won $11,305,373 in Prize Money on the European Tour

The world number 41, proved himself as an amateur when he won the 2009 Irish Open on the European Tour. It marked just the third time an amateur had won a European Tour event at the time. Lowry shot an impressive 62. Lowry has since won as a pro in Europe, in the 2012 Portugal Masters. He also has one joint PGA Tour win at last year’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

His best finish in 2016 was at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, where he tied at 23rd.


4. He Has Earned $1,649,232 on the PGA Tour

Lowry enters the final round of the U.S. Open with one PGA Tour win, the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

Against a highly competitive field at Firestone Country Club, Lowry showed poise to earn his first PGA Tour win.

On the 72nd hole with a one-stroke lead in the final round, Lowry had to hit his approach shot over a set of tall trees, he hit the shot to within 15 feet, then made the birdie putt to solidify the win.

Lowry has earned $746,506 in 2016 on the PGA Tour, and has made a total of $1,649,232 in his PGA Tour career.


5. He Has a Host of Sponsors

The Bank of Ireland signed Lowry in a sponsorship deal in June 2014 which runs to the end of December 2016.

The bank’s three-year sponsorship contract with Pádraig Harrington ended in 2010. Lowry wears the bank’s branding on the left chest of his tops, and also hosts a number of corporate events for the bank each year.

Lowry has several other sponsors including Bonnington Group, Sxrin, McGettigan’s, Simply Golf, and Kartel.
