West Indies Have Not Won a Match on This Tour
The Windies came into the tour of the UAE — where Pakistan play their home matches due to security concerns in their own country — fresh off their World Cup championship in the T20 format in April. But the team that made its way to the UAE was a shadow of that triumphant squad from just six months ago, missing several top players and with a new T20 captain, Carlos Braithwaite.
When the tour opened with a three-match T20 series, West Indies was promptly whitewashed in one-sided fashion.
Under ODI Captain Jason Holder, however, things got no better as the slow, spin-friendly surfaces in the Arabian desert allowed Pakistan spinners to feast on the free-swinging, six-slugging batsmen from the Caribbean.
In the first ODI on Friday, slow left-armer Mohammad Nawaz claimed four wickets as the Men in Green bowled out the visitors inside of 39 overs on their way to an 111-run win.
Babar Azam, just over two weeks shy of his 22nd birthday, tallied his maiden ODI century, posting an innings of 120 to lead Pakistan to what proved to be an insurmountable 284, in a match that went to the Duckworth-Lewis method after a faulty floodlight caused a delay in play, coming in the 45th over of Pakistan’s innings.
Nonetheless the 24-year-old Holder remained optimistic that his squad could reverse their fortunes in the second ODI.
“In this situation, we need to turn things around and we really need to look at ways we can improve,” he told ESPN CricInfo. “Obviously one big area is the batting. We did see off the new ball [in the ODI]. It’s just a matter of rotating the strike a bit better than we did today. I think once we do that we should go into the next match in better stead.”
West Indies have been looking to their veteran players to lead with the bat, but Kieron Pollard, Duane Bravo and Denesh Ramdin were all serious disappointments in the opening ODI, recording just nine, eight and 12 respectively. Only Marlon Samuels with a respectable if not spectacular 46 showed any kind of life in the Windies’ chase.
That quartet will need to do better for West Indies to even the series and have a shot at retaining their ICC world eighth-place ranking — and with it, automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup in England. Pakistan, on the other hand, sit ninth and can overhaul West Indies with a win on Sunday followed by another in the series finale.
