As the third-year pro was jawing with members of the Packers, back judge Steve Freeman stepped in and put his hand on the chest of Lewan, who quickly batted it away. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to get him kicked out of the game.
Here’s video of the incident:
And here’s Lewan heading back to the locker room:
As ESPN’s Paul Kuharsky noted, it may have been an overreaction from Jeff Triplette’s officiating team:
It’s not uncommon for officials to touch players, as back judge Steve Freeman did with Taylor Lewan. They get a players attention, guide or steer them, calm them. It’s not nearly the same as a player contacting an official. But referee Jeff Triplette’s crew has officiated six of the NFL’s 11 ejections this year. He is very sensitive to it.
Fortunately for the Titans, it doesn’t appear they’re going to miss their former first-round pick in Week 10, as they jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead over the Packers.
Lewan, per VP of Officiating Mike Pereira, is facing a fine of about $30,000.
