Final Score
Everton: 0-0: 0
Liverpool: 0-1: 1

Daniel Sturridge has a nightmare for Everton in recent meetings, and he struck again Monday to give Liverpool the Derby win.

He didn’t score, but it was his shot in the 94th minute that hit the post, bouncing back to Sadio Mane for a wide open opportunity. The goal was the bright spot in a physical game without many chances, and one that Everton feel they deserved at least one point from.

The Toffees came out strong in the first half, and played smart defense for most of the evening. The goal was a bit of magic from Sturridge, combined with some luck from the post.

Liverpool take all the points and still sit third in the Premier League, and have now gone 12 Merseyside Derbys without a loss. Its Everton’s first loss in five derbys at Goodison Park, and they remain ninth in the table.

Great chance for Liverpool to start the final 45, but Firmino can’t get his shot above Stekelenb

Halftime

Tight contest after 45 minutes, with Liverpool picking up steam heading into the break. The first goal of the second half will be critical, as Everton haven’t had many chances after their initial burst.

Liverpool get the best chance of the half so far, but Origi blasts it over the net from close range. Liverpool have gotten better as the half has progressed, and they might have found something down the right flank with Nathaniel Clyne, who is finding himself lots of space.

Everton send a ball in dangerously but Barkley’s shot is not even close.

The crowd is set here at Goodison Park, and play is underway.

Preview

It’s been 11 meetings since Everton won the Merseyside Derby, but that’s what they’ll try to do when Liverpool visit Goodison Park on Monday.

That streak dates back to 2010, when Everton won at home 2-0. The Toffees could make it two consecutive wins after a midweek win over Arsenal, which would take them up to seventh in the table.

Liverpool currently sit third in the table, and may see Daniel Sturridge return to action in this match. Sturridge is dealing with a calf injury, but Jurgen Klopp has hinted at his involvement. Sturridge has killed Everton in recent appearances, scoring four goals in his last five Merseyside Derbys.

Everton will be without Phil Jagielka, who is serving a one-match suspension. Joel Matip and Emre Can are still banged up for Liverpool, but Can might return from a knee injury that has caused him to miss two games.

One of the oldest rivalries in the sport, Monday will mark the 227th Merseyside Derby in all competitions. Liverpool lead the series 74-57, with 63 draws along the way. The past four previous Derbys at Goodison Park have all ended in draws, including a 3-3 classic in 2013.
