John Ross potentially just made himself some money at the NFL Combine. Ross’ official 40 time was 4.22 which broke Chris Johnson’s 4.24 record.
Prior to the Combine, Heavy had John Ross going to the Tampa Bay Bucs with the 19th pick in our mock draft. Going into Indianapolis, Heavy along with most draft publications had Ross as the third-ranked wide receiver behind Mike Williams and Corey Davis.
With Corey Davis injured and unable to participate in the Combine, Ross could have jumped him with the speed he showed in Indianapolis. Whether Ross can compete with Williams to be the top wide receiver off the board in April remains to be seen.
In his latest mock draft, ESPN’s Todd McShay had Davis going fifth to the Titans and Williams going tenth to the Bills. Ross was outside the first round. Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller had Ross going at the top of the second round to the 49ers with the 34th pick in his latest mock draft.
Like Heavy, CBS Sports’ Dane Brugler had Ross going to the Bucs at 19 in his latest mock draft.
In addition to being a speedster, Ross gives an NFL team versatility with his ability to be utilized in special teams. Last season, Ross had 81 receptions for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns at Washington. Ross also returned kickoffs and had 411 return yards along with a touchdown. His career high came in 2014 when he had 938 return yards and two touchdowns.
The biggest question for Ross is his durability. After the Combine, Ross will have shoulder surgery. He missed the entire 2015 college football season with injuries.
In addition to his great run, Ross showed out with a 37″ vertical as well as a 133″ broad jump. He came in at 5’11” and 188 pounds.
