WWE fans were surprised to learn earlier this month that Renee Young and Dean Ambrose were married. The couple had never even announced their engagement, and not a word was said about their marriage until viewers began to notice both of them wearing wedding rings. Now we’re beginning to learn more about Young and Ambrose’s very private wedding ceremony.
In a new interview with E! Online, Renee Young clarified that she and Ambrose did get married this month, and so it’s not as if they were married long ago and have just kept it a secret until now. Instead, the wedding took place on Sunday, April 9th.
Young told E! Online that she and Ambrose had been planning to have a low-key wedding in Las Vegas, where they live, and six months ago, they got their marriage license. From there, they figured the wedding would be a spur-the-moment thing.
And indeed, earlier this month, the couple was going to bed when Dean Ambrose suddenly presented Renee Young with a wedding ring.
“So we ended up going on Yelp and we found a 24-hour pastor to come to our backyard,” Young told E! Online. “It was so handy and his name was Pastor Pete and he lived around the corner from us, so he was there. They were very concerned by the way because it was 1 o’clock in the morning, so technically it was Sunday and they were very concerned about us calling, they were like, ‘Is everything OK? Have you guys been drinking? What’s happening?’ We’re like, ‘It’s fine, you can come down.'”
Young went on to say that she and Ambrose woke up a friend of theirs to come be a witness, and that was that. Looking back, Young says that she’s happy that she and Ambrose did it this way.
“We’re very non-traditional,” she told E! Online. “So that’s why we didn’t feel like we needed to do the engagement or to do this big, fancy wedding. It was so perfect and so us. There’s not a single thing about it I would change.”
Young told just about everyone she worked with about the wedding, but it seems that she wanted to keep it a secret from the fans for as long as possible. On the first episode of Talking Smack after the wedding ceremony, Renee Young could be seen wearing her wedding ring, and Kevin Owens confronted her about it, putting her on the spot and making it clear to the viewers at home that Young didn’t want to talk about her marriage.
“By the way, congratulations,” Owens said on the show. “You know why I’m saying congratulations? Right? Am I…is this a thing?”
Shane McMahon then said on the show that they aren’t talking about it, and Renee Young changed the subject. At that point in the night, fans had already been speculating wildly about Young and Ambrose’s relationship status, and so Owens’ comments only confirmed what they already thought.
The following morning, Renee Young took to Twitter to reveal the news, telling fans that marriage is nice.
It’s not hard to understand why Young and Ambrose may have wanted to keep their marriage out of the public eye. After all, they’ve talked about the fact that Ambrose has had stalkers and Young has received death threats.
“I get many a death threat…I mean, there’s a lot of anti–Renee Young pages out there,” Young said in a recent interview with Vegas Seven.
