When Ajax takes the field against Manchester United in Wednesday’s Europa League final, make yourself familiar with the names in the Ajax lineup. Chances are we’ll be hearing them for a long time.
Over the weekend, Ajax manager Peter Bosz fielded a lineup with an average age of just 20 years and 139 days. It was the youngest starting XI in Dutch league history, and the team posted a 3-1 victory over Willem II. Davy Klaassen is an old captain at 24, but the budding star is teenager Kasper Dolberg. Ajax play an open game, so expect lots of running from Dolberg and Chelsea loanee Bertrand Traore against the United defense.
United won’t have Stockholm’s favorite son active for their first-ever Europa final, but they remain betting favorites. Eric Bailly is suspended after a scuffle in the semifinals, and he’ll join Luke Shaw and Marcus Rojo as disabled defenders for the club. Jose Mourinho has faced Ajax six times in his career, all with Real Madrid. He has won all six of those meetings with an aggregate score of 20-2.
