WWE The Punjabi Prison structure on SmackDown Live.

A new episode of SmackDown Live just finished airing on the USA Network. Here’s what happened:

9:48  Kevin Owens and Baron Corbin defeat Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles. Before the match even starts, Owens and Corbin attack Styles and Nakamura. The match itself ends when Kevin Owens executes a pop-up powerbomb and takes down AJ Styles.

9:35 – In an X-Files parody, Tyler Breeze and Fandango keep thinking they see aliens, only for it to just be regular WWE employees. They then receive a package with their toy horse’s head and a threatening note indicating that someone wants to see them at Battleground.

9:33 – Backstage, Naomi says that she will congratulate whoever becomes the number one contender this Sunday, no matter who it is; she hopes that whoever wins is ready to go up against her. Carmella walks in holding the Money in the Bank contract. She says that wherever Naomi goes with the title, Carmella will be there too.

9:25 – After the match, Tamina and Lana enter. While Becky Lynch and Charlotte are distracted, Natalya jumps into the ring and attacks Becky Lynch. Tamina and Lana then jump in, and everyone brawls.

9:16  Becky Lynch defeats Charlotte by submission. Natalya sits in on commentary, making fun of Charlotte and Becky Lynch the whole time and suggesting that they aren’t real friends.

9:13 – Backstage, AJ Styles catches up with Shinsuke Nakamura ahead of their tag team match tonight. Nakamura eyes Styles’ United States Championship, saying, “One day, you call, I answer.”

8:56 – John Cena enters. The ring has the American flag hanging in one corner and the Bulgarian flag hanging in another. Cena says that we will see amazing things this Sunday at Battleground, including the Flag Match against Rusev. He says that we will remember either the flag of the U.S. waving in victory, or the victory of the flag of Bulgaria. Cena goes on to say that he is ready for the match, though he says he has his work cut out for him.

Cena goes on a patriotic monologue about situations in history where the American flag and grabs the American flag remained standing tall, including after 9/11. Cena then grabs the American flag and waves it around, but he’s suddenly attacked by Rusev, who locks Cena into an Accolade. He then grabs the Bulgarian flag and walks out of the arena waving it.

8:48 Mike Kanellis defeats Sami Zayn. He does this with the help of Maria Kanellis, who at one point gets into the ring and physically stands between Sami Zayn and Mike Kanellis.

8:40 – In an interview with Renee Young, Chad Gable says that he had no idea Jason Jordan was Kurt Angle’s son. He says that he and Jordan accomplished a lot together, but now he has some ideas about what’s next for Chad Gable. This is a great chance for everyone to see Chad Gable on his own, Gable says.

8:37 – The show rolls a video package recapping last night’s revelation that Jason Jordan is Kurt Angle’s son.

8:31 – Backstage, Shane McMahon talks to Tamina, Lana, Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Natalya. Shane says he wants to give someone a match, and Charlotte says she wants to fight Lana. Natalya wants to fight Lana too, as does Becky Lynch. Natalya suggests that Charlotte fight Becky Lynch tonight. Charlotte rejects this idea because Shane wants a competitive match, and Becky Lynch is offended. This convinces Shane to book the match.

8:17 Jimmy Uso defeats Kofi Kingston.

8:00 – Jinder Mahal enters. The WWE ring has been surrounded by the Punjabi Prison, the structure that will be used at Battleground on Sunday. Mahal says that this structure will be the final resting place of Randy Orton’s legacy. The Singh Brothers then explain the rules of a Punjabi Prison match.

Randy Orton enters. He says that Mahal must either be the bravest person he’s ever met, or he’s just not that bright. After all, Orton says, Mahal is actually choosing to be locked up in the Punjabi Prison with Orton, isolating the only advantage he’s ever had: the Singh Brothers. Orton says that he has nothing to lose, and he starts climbing the outside of the Punjabi Prison. Orton says that Mahal has the weight of the entire nation of India on his back, and after Sunday, they’ll all consider him to be a disgrace.
