Box Score

This was not the game for Cowboys fans to be reassured the team would be fine without Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys rushed for just 48 yards in a 13-10 loss to the Rams. Dallas running backs averaged just three yards per carry.

Darren McFadden finished with six carries for 28 yards while Alfred Morris had five carries for 11 yards. Neither team’s offense had a lot of luck finding the endzone, but the Rams young skill players flashed in the Rams first preseason game.

Justin Davis had seven carries for 70 yards, but coughed up the football several times. The Rams young receivers looked good including Cooper Kupp and Nelson Spruce, who had six receptions. New Rams receiver Sammy Watkins did not play in the game.

Jared Goff was three of four for 34 yards in limited action. Todd Gurley had four carries for two yards.

Neither Dak Prescott or Ezekiel Elliott played for the Cowboys. Rookie quarterback Cooper Rush was one of the few bright spots for the Cowboys. Rush was nine of 11 for 104 yards and a touchdown.

Here’s a look at the Rams win over the Cowboys.

Ezekiel Elliott Did Not Suit Up

While Elliott’s suspension does not begin until the start of the regular season, Elliott did not play in the Cowboys second preseason game. Elliott was seen running sprints during pregame warmups, and does not appear to be hurt. He is expected to appeal his six-game suspension.

Cooper Kupp Scored His First NFL Touchdown But Not the Way You May Think

Goff connected with Robert Woods on a slant route early in the first quarter. Woods fumbled the ball into the endzone after getting hit by a Cowboys defender. Kupp recovered the ball in the endzone for his first NFL touchdown, just not the way he expected it to happen.

Darren McFadden Started For the Cowboys at Running Back

McFadden got the bulk of the Cowboys carries to start the game. Neither Morris nor McFadden stood out early on. McFadden had six carries for 28 yards in the first half. Morris had three carries for five yards.

Rico Gathers Scored the Cowboys First Touchdown to Tie the Game at 10

Gathers had been thought to be in danger of making the Cowboys roster, but his impressive play during the preseason seems to have solidified his status on the team. Gathers caught a touchdown pass from Rush late in the third quarter to make it 10-10.

The Rams would kick a field goal late in the fourth quarter to take the lead. Dallas was not able to make a serious challenge late in the game.
