The Approach G6 Handheld GPS debuted over 5 years ago, but it’s still one of the more popular and practical golf devices from Garmin. With over 27,000 pre-loaded courses, the Approach G6 features a glove-friendly touchscreen which clearly displays the green view, your distance to the hole, and your scorecard at the touch of a button. You can also track your stats (greens in regulation, fairways hit, and putts per round) that can be accessed during the round or saved for later for your own assessment. Smaller than a cell phone, the G6 is compact enough to fit in your pocket (it measures 3.7 inches long by 2.1 inches wide by 0.8 inches deep) and it’s also waterproof for those rainy days on the course. The Approach G8 came out a couple years after the G6 and while they have many of the same features such as manual pin positioning, shot distance measuring, stat tracking, digital scorecard ready, and being waterproof, the G8 has a handful of newer updates to expand its functionality. The G8 includes features like club selection mode, big numbers mode, automatic course update via WiFi, PlaysLike distance mode, and PinPointer, which will show you where the pin is even if it not visible to you. The G8 is also TruSwing compatible. If you purchase the TruSwing, you can attach it to your club and upon your swing, the device sensor will track your swing data to help you analyze and improve your stroke. The sleek, compact handheld features a 2.3-inch color touchscreen display and includes some new extras for even more help on the course. First of all, the S60 has all the usual features of a golf GPS device — yardage distances to the front, middle, and back of the green; yardage to layups; accurate shot distance measurements; digital scorecard; stat tracking; and pre-loaded courses (over 40,000) from around the world. But some new additions really set the S60 apart from the older models. Those features include: TruSwing compatibility; Garmin AutoShot; PlaysLike distance; PinPointer; SwingTempo; and Tempo Training. But the S60 is just golf. It also has other built-in sports apps like cycling, swimming, running, and outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, paddleboarding, and rowing. The Approach S60 is waterproof and also has a step counter, heart rate features, and smart phone compatibility. You’re going to pay a little more, but there really are so many extras.
