USMNT Schedules Friendly With Portugal

Getty Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo will face the United States in November in a friendly

The United States men’s national team doesn’t have a coach and it doesn’t have a World Cup to prepare for, but it does have an opponent scheduled for November.

The USSF announced Monday that the United States will travel to Portugal on Nov. 14 for a friendly match against the Portuguese in Faro, Portugal. Portugal would have faced a playoff if it had not beaten Switzerland in its final World Cup qualifier, but it won its final match to finish at the top of Group B and secure passage to the World Cup.

The sides have previously met twice in the World Cup, with the United States claiming a 3-2 decision over the Portuguese in 2002 that helped the Americans get out of the group stage on their way to the World Cup quarterfinals, their best result ever.

The sides played out a 2-2 draw at the 2014 World Cup, as Portugal scored the tying goal on the last kick of the match. The team is still debating who will be its coach, but the squad now has a specific timetable in which it must have a coach in place, with Tab Ramos a favorite to get the job. The USSF has said that it plans to appoint an interim coach this week.
