After treading water with Brett Hundley under center, the Green Bay Packers get Aaron Rodgers back in time for a must-win game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Sitting at 7-6 in a stacked NFC, the Packers must win out to have any hope of extending their postseason streak to nine years in a row. But with a murderer’s row remaining scheduled that consists of matchups at Carolina, against Minnesota and at Detroit, it’s a monstrous task. It’s a good thing, then, that they get one of the best quarterbacks in the league back under center.
Hundley did an admirable job filling in, but Hundley is not Aaron Rodgers. In the Packers’ five full games with Rodgers under center this season, they averaged 27.4 points per game and were first in the NFL in touchdowns per drive. In the eight games without him, the Pack averaged 18.5 points and were 17th in touchdowns per drive.
Still, he’s keeping expectations in check.
“Hopefully it gives a lift to some of the guys, but I’m not coming back to save this team,” Rodgers said. “I’m coming back to play quarterback the way I know how to play it. Hopefully, we all raise the level of our play collectively and find a way to win these three games.”
On the other side of the ball, the Panthers have quietly been one of the hottest teams in football. Behind a rejuvenated running game, they’ve won five of their last six games, scored 33.0 points per contest over the last four and are fresh off an impressive win over the then NFC No. 1 seed Minnesota Vikings.
If the Panthers continue to play like they have the last month, and if Rodgers’ transition back into the lineup is seamless, we could be headed for an entertaining shootout. Throw in all the playoff ramifications, and this sets up as one of the best–and most important–games of Week 15.
