Spotlight: Small Bands Making Big Commercials

We get it; our most loved songs will one day become commercials that sell us cars and video games and Jamaican vacations. Sometimes it’s shocking; sometimes it just works. These are current favorites (mostly).

Battles with Gary Numan “My Machines”

Great song. In fact, the entire Gloss Drop album is fantastic. The highly amusing video, part of The Creators Project, features a poor soul who is bested by an escalator. These guys are awesome.

eMusic has put together a free, 29-song sampler with artists playing at this weekend’s Pitchfork Festival in Chicago. Fleet Foxes, Battles, Toro Y Moi, Neko Case, Deerhunter, OFF!, Yuck, Shabazz Palaces and more show up.

Capitol Hill Block Party Music Festival Lineup

Seattle’s next big music weekend: TV On the Radio, Explosions In The Sky, Ghostland Observatory, Thurston Moore, Yuck, Austra, The Cave Singers, Best Coast, Handsome Furs, Kurt Vile, Cold Cave, F*cked Up, Les Savy Fav, Battles, Ra Ra Riot, My Goodness and a whole lot more.

What’s New In Music This Week

This week: Wood’s continue with more lo-fi magic, Brooklyn’s Ford + Lopatin synthesize and stimulate, Battles’ first album without their frontman (still good!), Mark Ronson gets Black Lips polished (for them), Arctic Monkeys continue their journey with a more serious sound.

Battles “Wall Street”

LaBlogotheque says: “For days we were searching for hangars, warehouses and big empty loft spaces. We got the opposite: it was incongruous, it was bloody exciting. We were going to shoot Battles in a rococo style lounge in The Hotel de Ville, the magnificent city hall and mayor’s office in the centre of Paris.”

Battles “Ice Cream”

NYC’s Battles’ first cut from their new album, Gloss Drop. Everything about it screams summer: the song is bouncy, the visuals are beachy, full of almost-nudity, and shots of chicks licking things, including ice cream (duh).
