Child Porn Found on Pinterest: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Pinterest, Child Porn, Crime, Investigation

A Utah Task Force is investigating child porn allegedly found on Pinterest.

Here’s what you need to know…

1.Investigation Began Five Months Ago

On thursday, Desert News reported that the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children task force had opened up 12 cases of child porn found on the photo sharing site. While the investigation began five months ago, charges are still pending for each one. The activity the unit discovered was essentially people posting pornographic images on unprotected pages for everyone to see. Essentially, these people were just bragging about their hobby.

2.Pinterest Alerted The Police

Pinterest employees took an active approach and were responsible for notifying the Utah ICAC in the first place. Gawker’s Valleywag site obtained a comment from a company spokesperson about the issue. They advocate open sharing but are completely against content like this. They felt a responsibility to report anything they feel is inappropriate. See the comments below.

The vast majority of activity on Pinterest is positive and constructive but we have zero tolerance for any child exploitation. We actively search the site for offending content, report it to law enforcement, and help prosecute those responsible.

3.Pinterest Opened Up Their Privacy Policies

Earlier this week, the photo sharing company said they would open their policy on nudes. The Financial Times said that this was in response to increasing complaints the online pinboard organization was getting from the artistic community. Pinterest acknowledged they would have to configure their content regulations when it came to nudity but this clearly is not helping them when it comes to this case.

4.This Is A Brave Move

According to Valleywag, the investigators were “dumbfounded” by how bold these people were presenting these pictures. Field Commander Patty Reed felt the site was a wholesome outlet for communities to share recipes or ideas for decorating and was shocked with the content her team found. The head of Utah’s ICAC Ken Wallentine couldn’t believe how brazen this was.

“Who would do that? Everybody knows there’s no privacy on Pinterest. Anything you post, everyone will see it. Michelle Obama has a Pinterest page. I mean, everything Michelle Obama puts on Pinterest I get to see,” he said. “It’s just so incredibly brazen. When you see that type of brazen behavior coupled with depravity, it tells you a couple of things. There’s some real evil at work there, and/or an underlying addiction, an underlying sickness, an underlying wickedness that seems to knock all of the behaviors that would prevent you and I from doing something so terrible.”

5.This Has Happened On Other Sites

For other sites, this has been an issue before so this is a problem companies like this need to address. Recently, Facebook has promised to enforce regulations for disturbing images/indecent information on their site. All of these companies are going to have to walk a tight line when it comes to topics like this. They advocate open sharing but clearly sick people found a way to take advantage. Developing their identity when it comes to establishing online communities is going to be more important now. Charges have not formally been brought to these perpetrators but we’ll keep an eye on this in hopes they get brought to justice.
