1. Make An Appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar

Call your local Apple Store to make an appointment at the Genius Bar. Alternatively, you can quickly set up a Genius Bar appointment using the Apple Store app. Download this app from the App Store, and allow it to use your location to find the Apple Store nearest to your current location.

Hit the “Stores” icon at the bottom of the screen, and you should see the store nearest to you pop right up. Tap the “Genius Bar” option, then select “Make a Reservation.” Next, select the icon for the iPhone, and then select the store nearest you. You can then select the best time for you to visit the Apple Store and consult with the Geniuses. Make sure you hit the “RESERVE” button to finalize your reservation.

If it’s near the end of the day, you may need to select an appointment for tomorrow or the day after, depending on demand in your area. Make sure you select an appointment that gives you enough travel time to get to the Apple Store location. Apple Store hours may vary. You can leave a comment on your appointment if you want to explain your issue prior to visiting the store.

You can also try getting a replacement through your carrier, or through the big box retailer where you bought your new iPhone. Call the store or visit in person for details that are particular to each retailer.

2. Gather Everything You Need For the Appointment

Apple suggests that you back up your iPhone prior to visiting the Genius Bar. They also suggest that you bring your device, the power adapter, and any other accessories you’ve purchased for the phone. You may also want to bring all of your documentation on the device, including receipts. Make sure you know your device password and have it committed to memory.

3. Request a ‘Visual Mechanical Inspection’ From the Genius Bar

Present your bent iPhone for a Visual Mechanical Inspection at the Genius Bar. According to an Apple rep quoted on CNET, “There is a test called a Visual Mechanical Inspection that the device will have to pass. If it is within the guidelines, they will be able to cover it. If not, the replacement would be a paid one.”

The CNET article adds that the Genius has some measure of personal discretion when it comes to issuing a replacement device. Basically, the Genius needs to determine two things in order for your iPhone 6 to pass the test: Was the bend caused by a manufacturing defect, and did the damage occur during normal use. So if, for example, you iPhone 6 was bent during the filming of a “torture test” video where you intentionally tried to bend the phone, you might not be eligible for a replacement.

If your Genius isn’t allowing a replacement, ask to speak to another Genius at the same store, or make an appointment at a different store. Apple has been getting a lot of bad press about this bending problem, so it’s not unreasonable to expect that Apple Geniuses will be sympathetic towards frustrated customers. Do note, however, that Apple does not yet have a free replacement program set up. You will likely have to pay to replace your bent iPhone 6.

Apple has responded to criticism about the iPhone 6’s bendability, stating that only nine users have experienced this bending problem. The company has instructed Apple Store employees to replace any affected iPhone 6 units that are under warranty, following a visual inspection.
