A massive DDOS attack has been happening off and on all day, and theories are flying as to who might be responsible. No one has come forward yet claiming responsibility, but there are quite a few ideas being suggested. Here are the top theories, along with some conspiracy theories circulating the Internet.

PoodleCorp & DDOS

One of the early theories that was posted related to the idea that PoodleCorp was behind the attack. The Battlefield 1 servers were affected by the DDOS attacks, and the Poodlecorp group apparently announced on Twitter a month ago that there would be problems on October 21. This was the last tweet from PoodleCorp:

This group claimed responsibility for Pokemon Go servers’ crashing in July. You can read more about PoodleCorp here.

Mirai-based loT Botnet & DDOS

Flashpoint has reported that the Dyn attack might be from a Mirai-based loT botnet. The Mirai source code was made public in early October and Mirai malware has recruited vulnerable devices into botnets at an increasingly fast pace ever since, Threatpost reported.

DDOS & WikiLeaks Conspiracy Theory

Some people are suggesting that this massive DDOS attack may be related to WikiLeaks. Earlier in the day, WikiLeaks tweeted that they had a big surprise in store for Tim Kaine and Donna Brazile. Then later, WikiLeaks said that there were “armed police” outside the Ecuador embassy. The photo, however, was from Tuesday, not Friday.

One conspiracy theory circulating is that the DDOS attacks are actually an attempt to keep U.S. citizens from reading the latest email releases. This false flag type of theory doesn’t have any proof behind it, but Internet conspiracy theorists are sharing it widely.

Russia & DDOS Attacks

Another conspiracy theory circulating is that Russia is behind the attack. The idea behind this theory is that Russia was preemptively launching this cyber attack after U.S. officials said they might launch a cyber attack against Russia for possible, but unproven, connections with WikiLeaks. You can read more about this theory here.
