Top 10 Best Under Eye Concealers

under eye concealer, best under eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

Dark circles and puffy eyes don’t only happen after a late night bar crawl. For some of us it’s everyday no matter how much beauty rest we get. We all get them as we age, but how early they crop up has everything to do with genetics. It can be difficult to choose the right concealer and you can really tell when you’ve chosen the wrong one. There’s color to think of and which formula is right for your skin type. I’ll go over all that so you can see what your skin needs to look smooth and refreshed.

What causes dark circles and puffy eyes?

They’re two entirely different problems and so you’ll need a different concealer type depending on if your eyes are puffy or dark or both. Puffiness under eyes is generally the result of swelling from things like crying, water retention, alcohol consumption, or aging. If puffiness is a big issue for you try to cut back on your salt intake and skip the cocktails, but I’ll never tell anyone, of any gender, to skip crying. That’s what concealer’s for. As we age, the skin, tissues, and muscles around our eyes weaken and no longer keep their proper shape. That’s why as we get older, we develop bags as the normal fat cushion around our eyes settles lower than it used to be. When your under eyes are swollen, you need a concealer that’s one to two shades darker than your normal skin tone to visually push the puffiness back into place.

Dark circles have everything to do with how thin the skin around your eyes is. The skin of your eye area is under half as thick as the rest of you body, with your eyelids being the thinnest part of your skin over all. When your eyes look dark, it’s because the blood vessels around your eyes are visible through your skin. Those predisposed to very thin skin around their eyes are going to have darker circles. It’s not all genetics though. When you’re stressed and overtired, increased blood volume and high blood pressure make those blood vessels even more prominent. So concealer is a great fix, but self-care is also great. Dark circles make your eyes look like they are pushed farther back so you need a concealer one to two shades lighter than your skin tone to bring them forward.

How to choose an under eye concealer.

Whatever you’re concealing, you want to choose a shade that is the opposite color of your problem area. Reach back to your knowledge of the magic of the color wheel from when you were a kid. Green is the opposite of red. If inflamed blemishes are your issue, choose a concealer with a greenish hue. Also check out my guide to the best acne spot treatments to really make that zit disappear.

Find some natural light and take a good look at your skin–florescent bulbs always throw your skin color off. If your dark circles are blueish, go with an orangey concealer. If your eyes look bruised and purple, a yellow tinted concealer will bring you back to even. If your puffiness has a yellow tinge, go for a purple tint.

The formula you need depends on your skin type. Concealers come in liquids, creams, pencils, and sticks.

Liquid concealers are a safe bet for nearly all skin types. The only folks who should avoid liquid concealers are those with very dry skin as the liquid won’t look as natural over dry skin. They’re great for covering large areas, concealing fine lines, and offering a range of coverage. You can build liquids up from having sheer coverage at one layer to opaque at two or three. Don’t go over that though or it can look unnatural.

Cream concealers are where dry skin wants to be. It’s also a good fit for average and combination skin. They’re easy to blend and provide good coverage. Creams are prone to creasing so keep that in mind if fine lines are a concern.

Pencils and sticks are super convenient. They’re great for applying on the go and you don’t have to worry about spilling. Because of their thicker formula, people with oily or combination skin will want to avoid these as the natural oiliness of these products could clog pores.

Techniques and tips.

Always apply eye cream first to give your make up an ideal surface to stick to.

Foundation first, concealer second. Adding foundation on top of your concealer can smudge it around to the wrong parts of your face and defeat the purpose.

If you’re lightening, don’t just use it in the space under your eye. Apply your under eye concealer in an upside down triangle pattern that reaches about halfway down your nose. This will brighten and lift your whole face.

Let your concealer sit before blending. Concealer tends to change change color as it warms up and reacts to the air. When you immediately blend, you’re working with a product that isn’t ready. It’s like trying on clothes that are wet. This isn’t how they’re normally going to behave. Some people call this letting your face “cook.” Once the concealer has melted, blending will be easier and less likely to shift on you.

Dot, don’t smear. Instead of painting the area to be concealed completely with the product, dab it on lightly and pat with a blending sponge until you have even coverage.

Set your concealer with loose setting powder for all day staying power.

Okay, let’s get to the fun stuff.

1. Best Combination Under Eye Concealer: Glo Minerals Concealer Under Eye

glo minerals

This cream concealer comes with two different shades to address different issues. It’s a thick cream and so packed with pigment that you don’t need much of it to get great coverage. So even with this relatively smaller compact, the product will last you a very long time. You’ll know when you’ve used too much if you find that the concealer is caking. A thin, layer is all you need. A light hand and setting powder go a long way to this concealer not creasing and lasting all day. For being so heavily pigmented, it’s a very natural looking concealer that covers without looking pasted on. The formula, besides being luxuriously smooth and creamy, is great even for acne prone skin as it won’t make you break out. It contains vitamins A, E, and C, as well as green tea extract to improve the look of your skin even after you’ve taken it off.

2. Best Under Eye Concealer for Dry Skin: Stila Perfecting Concealer

under eye concealer, eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

If you have dry skin, this satin finish cream concealer might be for you. It’s a very thick formula that won’t dry you out, make you break out, or highlight any uneven texture. It may be a little thick for some and can even feel a little sticky when applying, but it blends right out and softens to match your skin tone without harsh edges. If you are prone to creasing, this one might not be for you as it seems to crease with some folks and be the holy grail of non-creasing concealer for others. If you’re right on the edge, a damp blending sponge and good setting powder can work miracles. Because it’s so thick, you need only the tiniest bit which means one tube can last you around a year. I love stila’s number of colors choices and they range from very light to rich, dark tones so you can match your concealer to your skin and needs.

3. Best Under Eye Concealer for Puffy Eyes: Julep Cushion Protector 5-in-1 Skin Perfector

under eye concealer, eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

I love the applicator on this one from Julep that so many have been anxiously awaiting. The liquid concealer is fed into the soft, sponge applicator by twisting the bottom so you get all the benefits of doe foot wand applicators without the questionable sanitation of sticking a used wand back to store sitting in your product. Julep is offering 18 different colors from Alabaster to Espresso so you can always find a shade that works for your skin tone. It’s a fairly new product and in high demand so you may want to snatch up your desired color before it’s sold out. It’s easily spreadable and has slightly sheer coverage that you can build in thin layers to full coverage.

The 5-in-1 features it mentions are concealing, correcting, illuminating, blurring fine lines, and long-term brightening with turmeric. Each color contains turmeric extract which is a spice often used in Indian cooking. It’s very yellow, as anyone who’s cooked with it and gotten it on their hands can tell you, but it’s also amazing at reducing inflammation. However they used it in their formula, the concealers aren’t overly yellow so you’re just getting the awesome skin benefits.

4. Best Full Coverage Under Eye Concealer: Lorac POREfection Concealer

under eye concealer, eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

The LORAC POREfection Concealer is a full coverage concealer that can cover up basically anything. It’s great for all skin types. Oily skin will appreciate that it’s oil-free. Dry skin will appreciate that is has nourishing botanicals and oil-free moisturizers. The POREfection Concealer is a thin cream that spreads and blends evenly, but is very opaque. If you’re looking for sheer coverage that you can slap on with no other makeup and go out the door, this might not be for you. But if you want a versatile concealer that’s easy on your skin and will cover whatever you ask it to, POREfection is perfect. (I had to.)

It comes in eight different shades and because they are so full coverage, they tend to look a bit lighter than you might expect, so keep that in mind when ordering. You do want to set it with powder to avoid creasing, but it’s not a huge offender when it comes to creases anyway. This concealer is fragrance and paraben free and LORAC has included extracts of olive leave, papaya, lemon, and white peony, as well as vitamins A, E, and C.

5. Best Anti-Aging Under Eye Concealer: Lifting Effect Fluid Concealer by Diego Dalla Palma

under eye concealer, eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

diego dalla palma

We’ve finally got a nice liquid concealer here that also helps decrease fine lines. The Lifting Effect Fluid Concealer has skin tightening silicones that make the concealer last longer and contains hexapeptide which is described as a “botox-like active ingredient.” It never feels heavy and won’t crease. It’s got a bit of a weightless thing going on here that fights gravity. Smooth and easy to both apply and blend, even just using your fingers, you only need a very small bit for long lasting, medium coverage. There are four color options and they’re a little on the yellow side which can be great for certain complexions and to color correct purple-tinted dark circles. While it does contain moisturizers, I would still say that those with dry skin should stick to creams. For everyone else, this is a great option, especially if you love fluid concealers and are concerned about fine lines.

6. Best Stick Under Eye Concealer: Benefit Fake Up Hydrating Crease Control Concealer

under eye concealer, eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

The Fake Up Hydrating Crease Control Concealer by Benefit is an interesting two-in-one product that’s particularly great if you have drier skin. It’s a stick concealer that’s shaped a little bit like a lipstick or lip pencil. You can see there are these two concentric circles of color, one white and one darker. The center color is the concealer and it’s surrounded by a creamy moisturizer that goes on clear. So if you’re worried that your concealer will accentuate dry skin texture, you’ve got a nourishing moisturizer literally wrapped around your concealer. This moisturizer also has a plumping effect that helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles for a dewy, crease-free glow.

It probably goes without saying that those with oily skin who are prone to breakouts should skip this one. The formula contains vitamin E and apple seed extract which sounds really interesting and makes me sad I have oily skin. The main downside is there are only three color choices: light, medium, and deep.

7. Best Long Lasting Under Eye Concealer: Amazing Concealer by Amazing Cosmetics

under eye concealer, eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

The Amazing Concealer is, in fact, amazing. It’s great for most skin types, breathable, water-resistant, and comes in 16 different colors. As with a lot of these higher end, highly pigmented concealers, you need to be careful to use the smallest amount. You only need a tiny dot for full coverage and putting on too much of the product can make it feel heavy. If your concealer is caking or heavy, try applying way less than you think you need. This tube could last you years. It’s creamy and so easy to work with, you don’t need any tools except your fingers. It’s highly emollient and could be touch and go for those with sensitive, oily skin. I love the inclusion of cucumber extract especially in a product to be used around eyes.

Price: $28 (33 percent off MSRP)

  • Rated 4.5 out of five stars by users on Amazon
  • 16 shades to choose from
  • Full coverage
  • Long lasting

  • Not vegan
  • Not for sensitive oily skin

8. Best Under Eye Concealer for Oily Skin: Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer

under eye concealer, eye concealer, dark circle concealer, undereye concealer

The Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer comes in a thin tube with a soft doe foot wand. The tip of the applicator is thin to easily fit into eye areas without bumping into your eyelashes. The formula is on the thick side so I’d recommend applying very little and using either a brush or blending sponge to smooth this out so you get even coverage. It’s free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, and alcohol so you know it won’t dry out your skin. It’s non-commeodogenic so it won’t clog pores and result in breakouts which is always a concern for me when choosing a product to go on my face. There are 16 shades to choose from with a variety of undertones. All on its own Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer won’t crease, but if you set it with powder you can definitely count on it lasting you all day as well.

9. Best Under Eye Concealer With Sunscreen: BareMinerals Correcting Concealer With SPF 20

under eye concealer, best under eye concealer, eye concealer, undereye concealer

One of the best things about this concealer is that is has SPF 20 for sun protection. Sun damage is one of the major causes of fine lines and wrinkles around the eye, so a concealer that prevents that is awesome. At the same time, maybe the worst thing about this concealer is that is has SPF 20. Sunblocks tend to not to perform very well in flash photography. If this is for everyday wear, then that’s not an issue and go for it if sun protection is high on your priorities. If you are a performer or are often photographed with flash, then you might want to find a non-SPF concealer.

You have eight colors to choose from with yellow and pink undertone options. It’s a very thick cream that can feel heavy if you apply too much. Just a little goes a long way. I love that it contains lemon peel extract which will, over time, make dark spots and acne scars less visible.

10. Best Waterproof Under Eye Concealer: Lancôme Effacernes Waterproof Protective Undereye Concealer

under eye concealer, best under eye concealer, dark circle concealer, eye concealer

This is a very forgiving product to work with. If you’re not confident in your makeup skills, this concealer is hard to go wrong with. It applies great with brushes, sponges, and just your fingers. As a very thin cream concealer, it is great for most skin types though I would skip this if you have very dry skin. The narrow tip makes getting the right amount easy, and the right amount is about as small a dot as you can squeeze out. The tube comes with 0.52 ounces of product which a ton for concealer and this should last you over a year of regular use. It will hold up in moisture and won’t fade on you throughout the day. There are 11 shade options, but most of them are fairly light and I wish they had more of a variety of darker shades to choose from. Overall, it’s a great concealer and won’t let you down.

Another great undereye concealer is Tarte’s Shape Tape. SUPER full coverage. It’s the only thing I found for me that doesn’t cake. I will give some of these others a try though!
