In a recent interview, Square Enix’s Motomu Toriyama, who served as director of Final Fantasy XIII, stated in an interview that:
“The in-game universe this time around is quite fantasy based, but also futuristic at the same time… We never really had any particular reference points for Final Fantasy XIII, in terms of places where we drew inspiration from. That said, we’re a little suspicious that the world famous Avatar movie might have take inspiration from us!”
An interesting comment to say the least. There’s two ways of viewing this; dude was just joking around, or legitimately inferring that James Cameron actually ripped him and his company off. The later is a fairly asinine notion, as well as just joking about it in the first place. The idea of mixing fantasy and technology is hardly original, something that’s been a part of Final Fantasy well before this latest installment. If anything, part 13 is nothing more than the same old (as many have already pointed out, well before me). If not for this supposedly awesome battle system in place, I’m certain even the most diehard fans of the franchise could care less, let alone distinguish it from previous entries.
What am I talking about; Square Enix zombies will buy anything with the words “Final” and “Fantasy” attached. Anyhow, back on topic, Avatar has also been in production well before the game it supposedly rips off from. The movie might not be the least bit original either (it’s a rip-off of Pocahontas more than anything else) but it sure as hell has nothing to do with FF. Via Kotaku.
